Executive Summary The Fifth Global Advisory Group on Nursing and Midwifery (the Group) addressed globalization and its implications for countries, health systems and nursing and midwifery. The Director-General, Dr Hiroshi Nakajima, noted that the advice of the Group was crucial to the continued relevance and effectiveness of WHO'S international work. The Director-General referred to Dr Chikari Sasaki, a Japanese mathematician and authority on the history of science, who described nursing as the fundamental art of healing, involving three elements: the patient at the core, the biomedical cure, and Care by the nurse that facilitated healing and alleviated suffering.
